This week, Patterson Harkavy Attorney Burton Craige was named the Best Lawyers® 2015 Employment Law "Lawyer of the Year" in Raleigh. Only a single lawyer in each practice area in each community is honored as a "Lawyer of the Year." Best Lawyers evaluates attorneys by conducting exhaustive peer-review surveys in which thousands of leading lawyers confidentially evaluate their professional peers.
After serving as a trial lawyer in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Justice Department, Burton has been in private practice in Raleigh for three decades. In his employment law practice, he has helped many victims of workplace discrimination vindicate their rights, secured the largest jury award in a sexual harassment case in state history, and helped bring about a new law protecting state employees from harassment. Most recently, he and his partner Narendra Ghosh succeeded in striking down a law that took away the due process rights of tens of thousands of North Carolina teachers. Burton has served as President of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice, President of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina, Chair of the ACLU-NC Legal Committee, Treasurer of Legal Aid of North Carolina, Vice-Chair of the Indigent Defense Services Commission, and Co-Chair of the Civil Procedure Study Commission.
He currently serves as Legal Affairs Counsel for the North Carolina Advocates for Justice.
